$1.64 billion remittance in 21 days of July

Bangladesh received US $1642.75 million (1.64 billion) inward remittance till July 21, thanks to Eid-ul-Azha when Bangladeshi migrants sent more money to families to celebrate one of the biggest festival of Muslims, according to data from Bangladesh Bank, reports UNB. It means, on an average the expatriates sent $78.22 million remittance in to the country during July 01-21, the opening month of the fiscal year 2022-23. In June, the last month of the fiscal year, the expatriates sent home $1.83 billion remittance through the banking channel, said the BB figures available on Monday. Bangladesh received the highest $24.77 billion remittance in FY2020-21, amid global travel restrictions amid Covid-19 pandemic. In FY 22 remittance income fell to $21.03 billion following the lifting of travel restrictions and sending of money through unofficial channels.

3MW hybrid power plant to be built at Manpura

State-run West Zone Power Distribution Company Ltd (WZPDCL) inked Monday an agreement with Western Manpura Solar Power Ltd (WMSPL) to implement a 3.0 megawatt (MW) hybrid power plant project combining solar, battery and diesel at Manpura island. Power Division secretary Md Habibur Rahman was the chief guest at the deal signing ceremony at Bidyut Bhaban in the city. This power plant will supply around 30,000 kilowatt-hour of electricity for 20 years at the tariff rate fixed by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).

Robi, Banglalink see customer growth in June

Mobile network providers Robi Axiata and Banglalink gained clients in June while Grameenphone, the industry’s top operator, saw a slight drop in its customer base. Robi and Banglalink added over 3 lakh and 1 lakh customers respectively in June compared to a month earlier while Grameenphone lost 1 lakh clients at the same time. Meanwhile, Teletalk’s figures remained almost unchanged that month, according to the latest data of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). On a year-on-year basis, the number of customers of Robi, which operates under brand names Robi and Airtel, increased by 4.4 per cent to 4.45 crore in June. Robi recorded Tk 2,018.8 crore in revenue for the first quarter of this year, up 2 per cent year-on-year. Banglalink posted an 8.6 per cent year-on-year rise in revenue in the first quarter of 2022 on the back of strong data sales. The revenue was Tk 1,242 crore in the first quarter of the year while it was Tk 1,144 crore in the same period in 2021.
