Bangladesh Bank gets five merger proposals from banks
The central bank got five merger proposals from banks and now plans not to receive any more applications for the time being before the completion of the initial bids. Under the five proposals, state-run Sonali Bank wants to acquire Bangladesh Development Bank Ltd (BDBL) and Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB) wants to take over Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (Rakub). Private commercial City Bank wants to acquire state-run BASIC Bank while United Commercial Bank plans to buy problematic National Bank and Shariah-based Exim Bank wants to absorb scam-hit Padma Bank. These are voluntary merger proposals and the lenders will apply to the central bank formally after the plan is approved at their board meeting.

Credit card use slightly down in February
Bangladeshi credit cardholders spent a bit less at home and abroad in February compared to the previous month, according to Bangladesh Bank. The transactions amounted to Tk 3,057 crore, dipping 4.77 percent. Those on the domestic front decreased by 4.49 percent to Tk 2,558 crore. Meanwhile the ones abroad were marked by a drop of 6.19 percent to Tk 532 crore. Overall inflation in Bangladesh stood at 9.67 percent in February, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. Although it was down 19 basis points from that in January, the consumer price index persisted at over 9 percent since March. On the domestic front, transactions at department stores decreased to Tk 1,269 crore in February from Tk 1,320.6 crore in January. A significant portion, or around 71.55 percent, of the credit card transactions took place using VISA cards while around 17.73 percent using Mastercard.

Karmasangsthan Bank gets new Managing Director
Arun Kumar Chowdhury has been appointed as Managing Director of Karmasangsthan Bank as per notification dated April 09 of the Financial Institutions Division, Ministry of Finance. Prior to his new assignment, he was serving as Deputy Managing Director of Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation (BHBFC. Mr Chowdhury is a dynamic and innovative officer. He has a brilliant career in the financial sector. He joined BHBFC in 1996 as a senior officer. Mr Chowdhury obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in statistics from Chittagong University. In recognition of his integrity, efficiency and dedication, he received the ‘Shuddhachar Award’ for financial year 2019-2020.
